My 3 yo daughter was fine getting up and going to toilet (waking us up of course) but after one time she wet her pants, she has continued and still continues to do so. It has been about 2 months nearly every night. We've tried stopping her drinking before bed and tried getting up every 2 hours to put her on the toilet. This work fine until we got exhausted. Why is this happening and what suggestions do you have?
It is perfectly normal for a 3-year-old to be still wetting the bed at night – as children move toward achieving nighttime continence they often experience periods of dry nights followed by a week or two of wet ones. As with other areas of development – the ability to control one’s bladder overnight takes time with some children achieving this faster than others. At this early stage the best way to manage wet beds is with patience and understanding. It is important to have realistic expectations and to not put too much pressure on young children to stay dry. I would not wake her to go to the toilet – this will only result in a broken night sleep for you and her and will not teach her to become dry on her own. Make sure there is nothing frightening her at night (you may need to leave a nightlight on) and that she has easy access to the toilet. To avoid wet beds I would recommend that you put her in an absorbent pant like DryNites – these are easy to pull down like underpants if she does get up to use the toilet through the night.
