Hi Rachel, it is incredibly difficult as a parent to watch your child in distress and feel powerless to make it stop. The most important thing for her at the moment is your love and support and the reassurance that this is in no way her fault. While the recurrence of bedwetting when using the conditioning alarm is much lower than when using other treatments, it is not unusual for children to experience one or two relapses. These may be unexplained or may occur at times of stress or in reaction to changes in children’s immediate environment. Many children take up to 6 months to achieve dryness although the time it takes for children to stop wetting should be faster with each treatment. In saying this, in about one quarter of cases the alarm treatment is not as effective and may be more successful if used in combination with other treatments. Some parents have reported successful outcomes when combining the conditioning alarm with prescribed medication or more experimental approaches such as hypnotherapy (http://www.ahahypnotherapy.org.au), or naturopathy (Australian Naturopathic Practioners Association – 1800 422 885). You should discuss these with your GP or continence advisor before commencing any form of treatment. Good luck!
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
