My daughter is 5 yrs old & had always worn a nappy to bed. She is toilet trained during the day but her night nappy is always wet. I am not sure how to go about stopping the night wetting & whether I should wait since she has global developmental delay.

My daughter has a rare genetic condition called 18p-.
She goes to the toilet just before bed & doesn't drink after dinner.

Hi C.T., It is not uncommon for children with global developmental delays to take a little longer to achieve nighttime continence. Developing nighttime continence is not dissimilar to achieving other developmental milestones and as such we tend to see individual variation even among children who do not experience global delays. Given that bedwetting is considered to be developmentally appropriate up to the age of 7 years, I really would not be overly concerned that your daughter is still wetting at night. If you are at all concerned about the amount she wets, or her bedwetting starts to become an issue for either you or her, then it would be time to speak with a doctor about your treatment options. Until then just continue as you are and reassure her that this is perfectly normal behaviour for someone her age.

Dr Cathrine
