My Son had severe faecal impaction although he was still opening his bowels. We are seeing a Paediatrician and he is having Movicol 1/2 every second day. However, he is having episodes of faecal incontinence (often quite a large amount of sloppy/pastey faeces). I know it will take a while for his bowels to return to normal and I need a product to use until this time. A big part of his problem is that he can't feel the passing of the faeces which I'm told will improve. I am very concerned about him developing a social stigma at school although at present it's O.K His teacher tells him if she can smell it which helps. I send him to school with wipes, extra undies and pants and plastic bags. If the Undies get soiled I've told my son just to throw them away. We have gone through a lot of underpants!!
Please help me, I'd appreciate any advice you have, especially about faecal incontinence products. My Son is very tall and thin-only weighs about 28kg so fits into smaller size than a lot of 9 year olds.
Thanks for your help.
Hi Jennifer β this must be very challenging for both you and your son. Itβs great that he has a teacher who is supportive as this will certainly make the process much easier and reduce the potential impact this can have on his relationships with his school peers. DryNites work in much the same way as a nappy only they are designed to be more appealing to older children, thus the underpant design. He could certainly wear these during the day as they provide a snug enough fit so as not to be noticed by his friends. He would need to change them after soiling to avoid any noticeable odour or leakage. You could request samples of both the smaller and larger sizes (off the website) to see which of the two sizes provides the best fit β DryNites that are too small or too large may leak so it is very important they fit him properly.
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
