My 5 yr old who has been previously dry for nearly a year has suddenly started wetting the bed every night. He has high functioning Autism. He doesn't have a UTI and medical reasons have been excluded. His prep teacher has not noticed any behavioural changes. Any suggestions would be appreciated Thank you
While there is certainly a higher incidence of bedwetting among children with Autism – this is usually with respect to primary bedwetting and not secondary as your son is experiencing. The first thing to do when it comes to secondary enuresis is to rule out any underlying medical basis. While UTI’s are a common cause you also need to rule out constipation, as this can be a major contributor. Stress certainly plays a role in secondary bedwetting. Have there been any significant changes in his life? The kinds of things that usually cause stress in young children include familial separation or disharmony, birth of a sibling, the loss of or separation from someone close, or peer difficulties, sudden changes to the environment can also be particularly unsettling for children with autism. If you think any of these are contributing factors then it is important that this is dealt with first before you can help him to become dry at night. Given the sensitivities that some children with autism experience with respect to food additives and colourings it may be worthwhile making an appointment for him to see a Naturopath as sometimes a change in diet can make a difference. Good luck!

Dr Cathrine
