I have a 14 year old son who has continually wet the bed over the years. He is a heavy sleeper and just does not wake when he wets. Generally he has been wet more nights per week than he has been dry, and is currently taking Minirin to help control this condition. The frequency of wet nights may have reduced slightly per week, however it is still a big problem. Any advice or suggestions you may have to offer would be greatly

probably the most suitable treatment would be a conditioning alarm – these currently experience the best outcomes with about a 75% cure rate. A sensor is placed inside his pyjamas setting off an alarm when the urine hits it – the alarm is designed to wake him up letting him know that he needs to get up and go to the toilet. If he does not wake on his own you will need to get up and wake him as he needs to turn the alarm off himself. Be prepared for some setbacks as about 10-15% of children do relapse. The good news is that the chances of success are increased when children experience less frequent wetting like your son. I know of a few parents who have used these in combination with medication and found it to be very helpful in helping their children stay dry. Ideally you should consult with your GP or a continence advisor before beginning any treatment.
