Hi Rachael, due to the strong genetic link it is not unusual to find a number of children in the same family experiencing bedwetting. When genetics come into play we generally find children become dry around the same time as their family member – so it would be worth asking either members of your own family or your husbands so you can get some idea how long their bedwetting may last. Alarms generally experience the best outcomes although this would be difficult given your eldest sons living arrangement. Medications are certainly fine in the short-term and will help your son to manage his bedwetting but it is important to realize that this does not provide a cure and as you have found, when stopped, children return to wetting. You could certainly look into reintroducing the alarm with your middle son. Some people have experienced success when combining the alarm treatment with hypnotherapy, which is designed to train children’s minds to recognise and wake in response to the alarm. Typically conditioning alarms can take up to 3 months to work – but you could certainly given this a try when your eldest son returns home for his summer holidays.
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
