STressful times
Hi Holly – this must be incredibly distressing for you all. Recurring bladder infections may be the result of urinary tract abnormalities so it is important that this is investigated further. If you have not already done so I would recommend that you ask to be referred to a pediatric urologist who will not only be able to run diagnostic tests but will also be able to help you to identify the appropriate strategies to help manage the situation. In the meantime make sure she drinks plenty of water throughout the day, make sure she does not hold her urine in for long periods, as this gives the bacteria in her bladder opportunity to grow. Your daughter is fine to wear absorbent pants both during the day and night to help manage her wetting. Promoting self-confidence and positive self-esteem is particularly important at this time. Adolescence can be tricky enough on its own without the worry of wet beds and daytime accidents. Remind her that none of this is her fault, while focusing on all those things she does well in her life.
Regards,
Dr Cathrine
