My niece is 11years old and has had bladder problems since she started school aged 5. She has been using a catheter for about a year, which has helped a little but she still gets infections and has been on all different antibiotics.

Dr Cathrine Answered:

it sounds like your niece’s urinary incontinence is due to underlying medical causes, something I am unable to comment on. I would recommend your sister make an appointment with her GP before meeting with the specialist to discuss what information she will need to provide as well as helping her to identify what questions to ask. I’m assuming her GP has already conducted a number of tests so she will want to discuss the results of these as well as discuss what approaches will be taken to help her achieve full bladder control. As well as addressing the medical side it is important that your niece is given lots of emotional support to ensure this does not impact on her self-esteem or self-confidence. Focus on all those things she is good at and don’t be afraid to heap on the praise.
