Wetting

Do you think it would be a good idea to wear a drynite and a larger adult nappy over the top at night so I wont wet the sheets when I leak. I am asking this because when I let go I have a very large flow and the Girls drynites leak on me. What is your advise on sleeepovers and partys too. Even school.. Do I still wear my special pants to that or what. Thanx 4 the help

Hi Britney – nice to hear from you again! Leakage often results from improper fit, which can occur if your DryNites are too small. Check that they are fitting you properly around the leg as this can contribute to leakage. If you find you have outgrown your DryNites you might like to consider products that have been designed for adults, many of which are available online or through your local Chemist. I would recommend that you contact the Continence Association of Australia (1800 330 066) who will be able to recommend an appropriate product. I do understand your concern over sleepovers and slumber parties – many children attend sleepovers while wearing DryNites. It’s often helpful to talk to parents before staying overnight and prearrange a place where you can discretely change your clothes and dispose of your DryNites. If you would prefer to keep it a secret there are things you can try like hiding them in the bottom of your sleeping bag then putting them on once everyone has gotten into bed – you can even hide a bag of lollies in the bottom to disguise the noise! Sometimes it’s a good idea to have a practice run at home so that you feel more confident when you do stay over. You can try and minimise the amount of urine you produce overnight, and therefore reduce the chance of leaking, by reducing the amount you drink in the evening and avoiding any food or drink that increases urine production like chocolate, coffee and soft-drinks. Given the frequency of your wetting, it is very important that you talk with your parents about making an appointment with your doctor – you can also use this opportunity to discuss medications that can be used in the short-term, these can be taken to help you stay dry while attending sleepovers or school-camps.

Dr Cathrine
