Hi Lisa, while it is certainly true that many children outgrow bedwetting on their own, this is not the case for everyone. The important thing to remember about bedwetting is that we should never adopt a one-size fit all approach. Typically treatment is recommended if your child is older than 6 years of age and wets the bed at least twice a week or more, is visibly upset or disturbed by their bedwetting, or their bedwetting begins to impact on their self-esteem or social relationships. If you are not comfortable with your doctor’s recommendations you can ask to be referred to someone who is more familiar with treating children with nighttime wetting. There are a number of different treatment options. In deciding what treatment to recommend doctors will consider your daughters age, the frequency of her wetting as well as how motivated she is to become dry. Remember, the more support you and your daughter receive at this time the less stressful the process will be.

Dr Cathrine
