is it normal that my 13 year old daughter still wets the bed? if so is there anything I can do to help her?

my daughter has been wetting the bed since she was about 4 and is now thirteen. she takes a tablet to help her sometimes, that was given to us by her pediatrician, but it doesnt really help. she goes to sleep overs at friends houses often and always gets worried that she will wet because her friends like to stay up late and she doesnt have a chance to put on a dry night on. She gets really upset about it because she also suffers from severe dermatitis as well. Are there any methods that can help her decrease her chcances of wetting the bed or should she just keep using dry nights

Hi Faith – when bedwetting continues into the teenage years it can begin to impact on a child’s self-esteem and social relationships. One of the main concerns that children have about bedwetting is being discovered by their friends – this is a real issue when it comes to sleepovers and attending school camps. One way to get around the difficulties she is experiencing with sleepovers is to hold the sleepover at your house, an environment which is both familiar and supportive. Sleeping bags are great for sleepovers as you can hide the DryNite in the bottom of the sleeping bag which she can pull on before she goes to sleep. Lollies at the bottom of the sleeping bag are also a great way of disguising any ‘rustling’ sounds. Unfortunately medication, while can be helpful in the short-term, are unlikely to provide a permanent solution to her nighttime wetting. Have you tried a bedwetting alarm? These typically experience the best outcomes with approximately 75% of children achieving permanent nighttime continence. I would recommend that you discuss this with your pediatrician as the more support and guidance you receive the better the outcome.

Dr Cathrine
