Bedwetting tips for girls

Being a girl is heaps of fun; there’s always something to talk about. You get to share your secrets about your favourite games, teachers, music, who’s your best friend (and who’s not) and if you’re a little older, who your boyfriend is. One secret you probably haven’t shared is about wetting the bed. It’s funny that something so common never gets talked about between friends.
Here are a few tips below for you. We’ve broken this up into younger and older girls as we know that you all face different challenges.
Girls 5- 7 years
There are heaps of kids who wet the bed at night at this age, even when they try hard not to. It’s just something that happens, somtimes without even waking up at all.
Some kids have never had a dry night at all and have always wet the bed every night, or at least a few nights a week and some used to stay dry and then have started to wet the bed again.
Usually you just stop wetting the bed as often and then later you just stop bedwetting all together. This can take some time, so be patient.
We know it can be pretty annoying for you when it happens so here are a few ideas for you to help you manage wetting the bed until you grow out of it.
Handy Tips at home
- Keep your night time pants in a handy place like your underwear drawer.
- Try to remember to put your own DryNite pants on before you hop into bed.
- Ask mum for a special bin so you can throw away your DryNites in the morning.
- Remember to tell mum or dad if you are nearly running out so they can buy you some more.
Handy Tips away from home
- If you’ve been invited for a sleepover make sure that you can put your DryNites pants on and off by yourself.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your friend’s mum. She’s a mum just like yours and will understand.
- Pack an extra nightie or a pair of pyjamas just in case.
- Remember to put your DryNites into your bag. Maybe roll it up in with your nightie or PJs, or put it in the bag with your toothbrush. Then you can take it to the bathroom and get changed before going to bed.
- Take a plastic bag with you for the next morning so that you can either throw your DryNites pant in the bin at your friend’s house or bring it home and throw it out later.
Just as you are learning to read and write at school, learning to play an instrument, or learning to tie your shoe laces it can take time. It’s a good idea to talk to mum or dad about what’s going on so that you all know that it’s OK. Sometimes you might think they are frustrated with you, but it’s not you they are cranky at; they know it’s not your fault.
Girls 8 -15 years
It may seem that this bedwetting will never end, but you can be reassured that for nearly all kids it does. If you haven’t spoken to your doctor yet, it might be a good time to ask mum or dad to take you along so that the doctor can absolutely rule out any medical reason for night wetting.
Once this has been done they may suggest that you try using various treatments to help your brain and body start getting the right messages to each other. We’ve included some information about each of the treatments available. If you have been using DryNites and you’re comfortable with them, then you could keep wearing them to bed even when you are using different treatments.
Handy tips at home
- Keep your night time pants in a handy place.
- Take responsibility for them and remember to put your own DryNites pants on before you hop into bed.
- Have a place that you take your pants off in the morning. Use a bin with a lid.
- Remember to tell your parents if you are close to the end of the pack.
- Try having a shower in the morning or at least a wipe down so that you remove any smell from your skin.
Handy tips away from home
The lead up to a sleepover can be full of worry and concern. It doesn’t have to be this way. With just a little bit of planning, things will run smoothly.
If you’re using DryNites Pyjama Pants the only worry you have is about how to get them on and off discreetly.
- Pack your overnight bag with your pants already positioned into your pj pants. So all you need to do is hold them together and slip them on.
- Try and find a toiletry bag that has a discreet side pocket for your DryNites to fit into. Then you can excuse your self just before bedtime to clean your teeth or put moisturiser on and simply change into your pants.
- If you have a sleeping bag you can always try and slip into them while you’re in your sleeping bag. It can be a bit of a challenge but can be done. Then you can slip them off and into a plastic bag at the bottom of the bag. Just remember to put the plastic bag and the DryNites pants in before you roll up the sleeping bag.
- It’s probably not worth trying to stay awake until everyone else is asleep as you may find that you doze off yourself.
- Pack some moist wipes so that you can have a quick wipe down in the morning if there’s no opportunity to have a shower.
- Pack an extra nightie or a pair of pyjamas just in case.
- Take a plastic bag with you so that you can either throw it in the bin at your friends house or bring it home and throw it out later.
- Remember that you may be worried about wetting at night, but your friends may be in the same boat or they might have other worries, like a fear of the dark, being worried about being away from home, sleep talking or nightmares. All kids have concerns at different times in their lives.
Need more advice?
If you are concerned about the effect that your bedwetting is having on other areas of your life, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Where can I go for advice?

Puberty raises its own challenges
You may also be noticing that your body is changing as puberty approaches. For some girls this can raise additional questions. What do you do when you start your period? The good news is that your DryNites Pyjama Pants should be absorbent enough to cope with a light to medium flow. If you’re concerned about them not being enough protection you can try lining them with a normal pad. Take a look at the UbyKotex website for some information about changes that are happening to your body during puberty.
